Embracing Change: The Journey to Embodying Your New Identity
Jean was having a difficult time getting a visa for a conference that wanted to attend in Seoul. Jean had recently left employment and started a technology company that was doing quite well. This conference was important to get the right contacts and expand her world-view of the industry. When I asked her what she had said was her occupation she said “sabbatical”. “So, you’re still an employee in your mind?”. This realization was a shock to her and she suddenly understood why she was not moving as fast as she could have. Jean had an identity thermostat!
In the journey of personal and professional development, one of the most profound challenges individuals encounter is the evolution of identity. Our identity shapes how we perceive ourselves and interact with the world around us. It’s a dynamic construct, influenced by our socialization, experiences, roles, and aspirations. However, transitioning from one identity to another can be a daunting task, often leaving individuals feeling adrift or stuck in limbo. What I call “monkeying”- holding onto where you were and reaching out to where you want to be; like a monkey who wants to jump nut won’ t let go of the hold on the branch.
In my role as a coach, I’ve had countless discussions with individuals grappling with this very issue. Whether it’s someone transitioning from employment to entrepreneurship or navigating a significant career change, the struggle to find or redefine one’s identity is a common thread. Many find themselves caught between the familiar comforts of their past identity and the beckoning call of a new one.
Consider the scenario of a Jean, the seasoned professional venturing into entrepreneurship after years of being an employee. Despite the excitement of embarking on a new path, they may find themselves clinging to the mindset and habits of their former role. Their identity is still rooted in the routine and structure of being an employee, making it challenging to fully embrace the autonomy and responsibilities of entrepreneurship.
So, how does one navigate this identity conundrum and unlock the potential of their new role or endeavor?
The key lies in embodying the new identity. It’s not merely about adopting a new title or role; it’s about internalizing the mindset, values, and behaviors that align with the desired identity. Here are some strategies that can help in this transformative process:
- Self-Perception: We see you how you see you! Embracing change requires a willingness to shed old layers of self-perception and embrace the uncertainty of growth. It’s about acknowledging that who we are today is not necessarily who we’ll be tomorrow.
- Self-awareness : Be willing to change your beliefs with new awareness. People once believed that the earth was flat and that you’d fall of the cliff of the horizon. Take the time to introspect and evaluate your beliefs, strengths, and aspirations. What aspects of your current identity are serving you well, and what needs to evolve? Understanding your intrinsic motivations and values lays the groundwork for shaping your new identity.
- Embrace Discomfort: Change is rarely comfortable, especially when it involves shifting core aspects of your identity. . Embracing change requires us to relinquish the safety of the known and venture into the uncharted territory of possibility. Acknowledge the discomfort that comes with stepping into the unknown, but also recognize it as a sign of growth. Embrace the challenges as opportunities to expand your capabilities and opportunities.
- Reframe Your Narrative: Who do you say you are? The stories we tell ourselves shape our reality. Instead of clinging to old narratives that reinforce your previous identity, reframe your story to align with your evolving aspirations. Focus on the strengths and experiences that empower you to thrive in your new identity.
- Seek Support: The butterfly once out of the cocoon can’t go back to crawling with caterpillars. Surround yourself with mentors, peers, or coaches who can provide guidance, encouragement, and accountability. Sharing your journey with others who understand the process of identity transformation can offer invaluable support and perspective.
- Practice Self-Compassion: Be gentle with yourself throughout this process. It’s natural to experience setbacks and moments of doubt. The “imposter syndrome” is real. Cultivate self-compassion and navigate the inevitable challenges with grace and perseverance. Celebrate each small victory along the way. Consistent action, no matter how small, propels you closer to embodying your desired identity.
Remember, the journey to self-discovery and embodying your identity is not about becoming someone new, but about uncovering the radiant essence of who you’ve always been.
