Our lives are impacted positively or negatively by the relationships that we choose to engage with. Your relationships are either adding value or eroding value. In a personal brand context, you can increase your brand equity by the relationships that you build.

When I think about the relationships that have endured and that have been valuable, there are some key principles that I have distilled.

Play the long game- Many people are transactional in the way they deal with others. If you want to build value-based relationships, be willing to invest time in building the relationship.

Take a long view of the relationship. If you have children, or plan to have some, build generational relationships that will benefit not only you but also your children and others.  It’s not all about you.

Be interested rather than interesting. Embracing an attitude of curiosity allows us to delve into the richness of others’ experiences, to truly understand their perspectives, dreams, and challenges.

When we show genuine interest, we create a space for meaningful connection.

Argue less and listen more. Perception is reality. If I am feeling hurt, that’s my reality.

Learning to take feedback without defensiveness is an art that not only refines our understanding but also cultivates an environment of open communication.

It is through active listening and thoughtful consideration that we bridge gaps, build understanding, and forge connections that stand the test of time.

Listen to understand. Do you want to be right, or do you want to build relationship?

Be present when engaging with others. In a world filled with distractions, the act of giving someone your undivided attention is a profound expression of respect. It communicates that the person before you matter, that their thoughts and feelings are valued.

This commitment to being present lays the groundwork for meaningful relationships that transcend the superficial. Keep your phone down and actually be present.

Be a giver. Be it in the form of value, time, or resources, generosity strengthens the bonds between individuals and organizations.

When we approach relationships with a giving mindset, we contribute to a collaborative ecosystem where everyone involved can thrive. The act of giving becomes a catalyst for positive change and growth.

Be confident in the value you bring to a relationship. Each one of us possesses unique strengths, perspectives, and skills.

Embracing and expressing these qualities with confidence not only enhances our individual contributions but also enriches the collective power of the partnership. Confidence, when rooted in authenticity, becomes a magnetic force that attracts meaningful connections.

Be consistent. This is the glue that binds successful relationships. Building trust requires a steady commitment to reliability, honesty, and integrity. When we consistently demonstrate these qualities, we create a foundation of trust that can weather the storms of challenges and uncertainties. Trust is the bedrock upon which enduring relationships are constructed.

Successful relationships are acts of co-creation. It takes time, commitment, and courage to build something meaningful with another person or entity. As we navigate the intricate dance of collaboration, let us celebrate the unique contributions each partner brings to the table.
If you want to build a sustainable brand, walk with others by being intentional about your relationships. It comes down to “Being” rather than just “doing”.
